150 YEARS OF FINE PUERTO RICAN COFFEES

Ready for fresh and delicious, Specialty coffee? Happy to announce that our coffee is ready for purchase.

  • Harvest starts in early October. Ripe coffee cherries are harvested and ran through a de-pulper the same day to remove the red hull. (Green cherries are left on the tree until ripe).

  • Next day, the de-hulled beans are washed and sun-dried in trays. The trays can be rolled under the house to protect them from rain.

  • In 10-20 days (depending on how much sun) the beans are dried to 11.5 humidity. They are stored in food-quality, air-tight bags for two months, allowing the flavor to deepen.

  • Then they go through the “piladora” to remove the remaining thin membrane, much like the membrane found in peanuts.

  • After being “piladas”, the beans, now called green beans b/c of their green tint, are ready to be roasted and packaged.

From harvest to purchase: about 80 days. The freshly-roasted coffee is now available, as promised.

Historically, the farm has cultivated and produced celebrated Puerto Rican varietals, including Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, and Typica.  Presently, the farm cultivates Caturra, Limaní, Marsellesa, Obatá, and Typica— many propagated from Hurricane Maria survivors— and continues to reestablish Puerto Rican varietals renowned for their quality, roots, and contributions to coffee research and genetic diversity.

Hacienda Masini is committed to the amazing people who keep the farm thriving.  In addition to U.S. protections that mandate fair wages and worker benefits, the farm offers additional benefits, including paid time off and training.  Through these acts, the farm supports Puerto Rico’s unique leadership in increased justice across coffee culture.
